The way you travel to the United Kingdom is evolving with the launch of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system. This innovative digital requirement is set to simplify entry processes while bolstering security. Whether you’re visiting for leisure, business, or a short stay, here’s a breakdown of what you need to know to stay ahead of the curve.
Understanding the ETA
The ETA is a digital travel permit designed for visitors from visa-exempt countries. It’s a quick and efficient way to pre-screen travellers before they arrive in the UK, ensuring smoother border checks and enhanced security measures.
Who’s affected?
The new rules roll out in two phases:
- Starting 8 January 2025, travellers from 48 non-European visa-exempt countries, including the United States, Canada, and Australia, will need an ETA.
- From 2 April 2025, citizens of European Union countries will also be required to obtain one.
If you’re a British or Irish citizen, or already hold a UK visa or residency permit, you’re exempt from this requirement.
Applying for your ETA
The process is simple, fast, and entirely online. Here’s how it works:
- Submit your passport details, personal information, and a biometric photo, along with answers to a few security questions.
- Pay a small fee of £10 per person.
- Most applications are processed within three working days.
Applications opened on 27 November 2024 for non-European travellers and will open on 5 March 2025 for European travellers. Once approved, your ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It also allows for multiple trips, with each visit lasting up to six months.
Important notes
While the ETA simplifies pre-travel checks, it doesn’t guarantee entry into the UK. Border officials will make the final decision upon your arrival. Additionally, airlines will verify your ETA before allowing you to board, so make sure to apply well in advance of your trip.
Get ready for your UK adventure
With the ETA system now in place, a little preparation goes a long way. Head to the official UK government website to apply and find all the details you need. By sorting your ETA early, you can focus on what really matters—enjoying your time in the UK!
Safe travels and happy exploring!
